This project was a sort of photographic endgame. It was the last project in which I was working as a 'straight photographer.' Each of the images was printed large and hung close together, stacked into a small gallery. (24x36 is the largest I can print and mount without using outside services, so I rarely produce anything larger than that.) The effect of the installation was consuming, if not overwhelming. Each image seems to come from a different photographic genre, which frustrated the gallerist's search for a representative postcard image.
The tone of the room was described most beautifully by L.A. Times critic Christopher Knight, "Russell, who also publishes a 'zine called Bedwetter, has a way with nonchalant despair."
