Becalmed is the product of an intense period of experimentation with image and text that occurred while I was transitioning from chemical to digital printing. As narratives began to take definite shape in my writing, the relationships I fashioned between images became freer. The Becalmed images are an accumulation of aesthetic approaches that I’d explored up to this point. I was writing a good deal about the end of chemical photography, and trying to envision a philosophy of the pixel that would allow the same cultural grounding for the digital image that exists for photography. As my practice changed, I needed to address the idea of change within the body of work, and used multiple photographic strategies while mixing digital and chemical prints in exhibition.
